Adventitious branching as a herbivore-induced defense in the intertidal brown alga Fucus distich us
نویسنده
چکیده
Adventitious branches are produced following lnjury in at least 5 specles of brown algae in the family Fucaceae. Field experiments showed that these structures can be induced in the intertidal brown alga Fucus distichus by mechanical damage to the plant apices. The mean number of adventitous branches on F. distichus and the percent of plants with adventitious branches was positively correlated with the density of littonne snails Ljttorina sitkana and L. scutulata near the plants at 8 locations within the main beach of Tatoosh Island, Washington, USA, suggesting that the production of these structures is a response to grazing by the snails. In laboratory feeding experiments, both L. sitkana and L. scutulata preferred normal meristematic tissue (apices) over adventitious branches. Thus. adventitious branches appear to funcbon as an herbivore-induced defense that protects newly produced tissues from damage by grazers. Neither L. s~tkana nor L. scutulata showed a preference for w n g s over adventitious branches. Concentrations of polyphenolic compounds were about 10 to 70 % higher in adventitious branches than apices but were 20 to 50 O/O lower than phenolic levels in wings.

Comparing the Relative Importance of Water-Borne Cues and Direct Grazing for the Induction of Defenses in the Brown Seaweed Fucus vesiculosus
Some seaweed species have been shown to release water-borne cues after herbivore attack, for example, to attract natural enemies of the herbivore. These cues may also be sensed by neighboring seaweeds and used to adjust their defenses in anticipation of a possible herbivore attack. Several studies indicated information transfer between seaweed individuals in the past, including the brown seawee...
متن کاملInducible resistance to herbivory in Fucus vesiculosus—duration, spreading and variation with nutrient availability
Inducible resistance in plants is a defense strategy for avoiding the negative consequences of herbivory on plant fitness. Since resistance is costly, the induction of resistance may depend on resource availability. Resource-based plant–herbivore hypotheses predict that the cost of producing carbon-based defensive metabolites will be higher when an excess of nutrients is available for growth. W...
متن کاملInduction of phlorotannin production in a brown alga: defense or resource dynamics?
Increase of phenolic secondary metabolites, phlorotannins, in brown algae due to gastropod grazing has been interpreted as an anti-herbivore adaptation. Here we tested whether such a response could be due to changes in truly available resources for the alga, not by the grazing activity of snails as such. We allowed two species of snails, Theodoxus flu iatilis and Physa fontinalis to graze on Fu...
متن کاملInduced resistance to periwinkle grazing in the brown seaweed Fucus vesiculosus (Phaeophyceae): molecular insights and seaweed-mediated effects on herbivore interactions.
Herbivory is a key factor for controlling seaweed biomass and community structure. To cope with grazers, constitutive and inducible defenses have evolved in macroalgae. Inducible chemical defenses show grazer-specificity and, at the same time, have the potential to mediate interactions among different herbivores. Furthermore, temporal variations in defense patterns, which may adjust antiherbivo...
متن کاملRecovery of the brown alga Fucus gardneri following a range of removal intensities
The consequences of disturbance are known to be non-linear functions of disturbance intensity. In this study, we investigate the effects of a range of disturbance intensities by experimentally manipulating the cover of Fucus gardneri, a dominant intertidal alga. The effects of disturbance on subsequent Fucus recovery were similar for canopy reductions of 0–80%. However, complete removal of all ...
